Pearls

As the Rolls Royce she was being chauffeured in approached the church, Elle clutched the pearls around her neck so tight that she was afraid of popping them. Pearls had become symbolic in her life, Elle received her first pair on the night of her sweet-sixteen birthday party, a second pair on the day she became an AKA, and each year her husband gifted her with a strand of pearls as an anniversary gift. That day ten strands of pearls hung around her neck, it was only befitting that she wore them all on the day of his burial; one strand for each year of betrayal.

One gets so caught up anticipating the beginning and living within the in between that they never put too much thought on the end. Dean and Elle met while he was a senior at Morehouse and she a junior across the street at Spellman. Handsome, fine, and rich, Dean was the man, all of the girls swooned over him, all except Elle. Elle personally knew at least five women he had been with and she had no desire to be another one of his conquest. Elle avoided Dean’s advances, but he was aggressive and relentless in his pursuit and she eventually agreed to have dinner with him. Dinner turned into breakfast and breakfast turned into what was supposed to be forever. After a two-year courtship where Dean swept her off her feet, they were married. Elle later learned that handsome and rich was a lethal combination for a married woman to have in a husband and it did not take long for infidelity to creep into their marriage. Dean’s first affair that Elle knew of was with a twenty-year-old cocktail waitress, the second with his assistant, the third with her soror - so much for the sisterhood - Elle thought when she found naked photos of her line sister in Dean’s phone, the fourth his attorney, the fifth some hood rat chick from New Brunswick, the sixth a childhood friend, the seventh an eighteen-year-old model he met in New York, the ninth his barber’s cousin, the tenth a stripper. Elle stopped counting after the eleventh affair which was the straw that broke the camel’s back, Dean no longer attempted to hide his infidelities and Elle no longer cared; her soul hardened and she became bitter, occasionally blaming the trifling women who allowed her husband to seek solace between the curve of their thighs. Elle often wondered exactly how many of his sidepieces posing as friends and associates she had hugged over the years. How many had been in her home, how many hugged her upon arrival at social events only to fuck her husband later that night after he sent her home, claiming that he was going to stick around to rub elbows. “I’ll be in shortly.” He always said. Shortly always turned into the next day.

Elle shifted uncomfortably in her seat and glanced out the window as the car came to a slow halt in front of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
